Montvideo by Samuela

ITALIANO

The first two weeks in this new city to discover and learn, have increased rapidly. The first impression was strange: it was a Saturday afternoon and the Ciudad Vieja rolled bales of hay, namely that there was hardly anyone on the street and the shops were all closed. How strange, I say, who knows what happened to the Montevideanos. Fortunately the next day, the sun decided to embrace us with “open hands” so we decided to take a stroll along La Rambla ... and mystery revealed! The men seriously engaged with their fishing-rods, couples and families resting, chatting and drinking mate! And a lot of people listening to music while intending to jog or taking the man’s best friend for a walk. Sun in the face and go: what better to do but walk and enjoy the sun or lie on the grass for a well deserved siesta on Sundays? However when you walk through the Ciudad Vieja during the week the centre is full with people and movement. Once you start to get to know the city and find information, you discover places like Centro Cultural de Espana, where you can watch films for free and get insight into Spanish cinema; discover that there are courses of free tango and salsa. You can go for a walk and get lost among piles of books or clothes stalls at Sundays ferias and if the weather allows and you're lucky, you can lie on the lawn, smoke a cigarette and enjoy the sun. While walking it is unusual to notice that one house is different from another, shapes and colours change, or to find out that behind a grand and impressive building there is an abandoned graveyard of demolished houses. At the same time it's nice to see the local traditions like gathering in front of a house door to share a mate and chat or fire up the barbecue on a Sunday to prepare a typical Asado. My favourite part of the day is to watch the evening approach on our balcony, listening to the sound of crickets and hear a horse passing. The driver jumps of the carriage whirls through the garbage collecting plastic and paper and sometimes grabbing a bite to eat for his horse. You start to realize that a new page of your life has started- this is your new home, in a new country and with many contradictions.

POLACO

Przed wyjazdem oglądałam zdjęcia, czytałam trochę o Urugwaju i Montevideo.

Najbardziej urzeka mnie architektura, zielone ulice pełne drzew, relaksująca moc Rambli, rzeki i zadowolonych z życia ludzi.

Before the departure I used to look for some pictures and read a little about Uruguay and Montevideo. At that time I had an impression that I´m going to an european-like country, which capitol city consists of wide streets, skyscrapers and sandy crowded beaches. It is how it´s shown in some brochures and guide books. To be honest in reality it is not very different from the description, however everybody can find a place for himslef. Quiet and narrow streets of the Old Town, beautiful woody parks, La Rambla stretching along the river for about 25km and cozy beaches. I like to get lost in the Old Town where low buildings, little shops and beautiful architecture allows me to escape from ¨the city¨ and feel like in a fairytale.

I feel here extremely comfortable, like at home. It is thanks to friendly smiling and drinking mate inhabitants willing to chat all day long.

Time here has a different meaning from the polish dimension. Time passes slowly, they take advantage of every single minute by chating, drinking mate and walking. At first it was difficult to get used to slow walk, answering to everybody´s questions and mostly to my students being always late if they show up at all.

The city seems very sleepy, it wakes up almost at noon, people walking patiently everyone in their own directions in one hand holding a thermos and the other mate. However they can eat dinner very late and party until the sun raises.

I´m in love with the architecture, green streets full of trees, relaxing power of La Rambla street, river and cheerful poeple.

To sume up Montevideo exceeded my expectations and I am not surprised at all that our english house owner decided to settle here.

In this cioty you can fall in love from the first sight. And so it was with me.

ITALIANO

Qui mi sento estremamente a mio agio, come a casa.

Šajā pilsētā var iemīlēties no pirmā acu skatiena. Un tā tas notika ar mani!

Finalmente sotto i miei piedi il continente latino-americano. Finalmente l'Uruguay. Montevideo.

Finally, under my feet the Latin American continent. Finally, Uruguay. Montevideo.

Montevideo welcomed me with a hot day.

The sun still warms the air, even if the winds begin to sweep the sky, making the unstable weather,  with brief but intense thunderstorms... filling the streets with real streams of water,  that disappear with the sun that in the maintime reappeared from the clouds.

I live in a house, in the district of Ciudad Vieja. I really like the style of the residence and I live with all others EVS volunteers in Montevideo.

The other volunteers are all very friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant in the residence.

In total we are in twelve from different nationalities.

I begin to know Montevideo, I like to browse through the city streets, the neighborhoods, La Rambla especially on sunny days is one thing to live, on Sundays when you fill with people and children who gather to drink “Mate” and take advantage of good weather.

Personally I had no clear idea how was Montevideo, so I like being surprised by the characteristic features of Montevideo and of Montevidean, the colors of the flag of Uruguay, of Artigas, of thirty-three is at every corner of Avenida 18 de Julio, the city's main street, along which several alternate vendors of: clothing, peanuts and of course mate.

Sunday is a pleasure capturing the colors and smells coming from the market stalls at the university, a giant market impossible to see everything in one day, where you can find all miles of books, music, fruits and vegetables, clothes , animals.

The youth centers where I work are located in Barrio Sur, is a district where live people in humble circumstances, and perhaps that has a special charm that personally attracts me, the faces of the people are real, and color of the outer walls of houses mixed of the sun dress the district with a special armosphere ... or it just corresponds to the Latin American image in my head.

I'm slowly discovering Montevideo for what it is, with its most modern and its most humble, and as the curiosity to discover the city and the Uruguayan culture is growing.

Communication with people is not a problem and all seems perfectly natural, this is certainly thanks to the people I met who made me feel welcomed.

I work in two youth centers with adolescents who have often complicated and difficult situations, before leaving I had not thought much about what I would find, not because I did not know, but because I didn't want that my idea was too rigid, inelastic, and the result is that I'm where I want to be and I'm doing what I want to do, and having the chance to stay in contact with these guys and watch the people who work closely with them and that is making me think a lot and at the same time is teaching me a lot.

It 'a short time I arrived, but the impression is definitely positive.

Beidzot, zem manām kājām ir Latīņamerikas kontinents. Beidzot Urugvaja.

Sazināties ar cilvēkiem man nerada nekādas problēmas, viss šķiet dabīgi, noteikti pateicoties šeit sastaptajiem cilvēkiem, kas man liek justies gaidītam.

It was pouring rain so I quickly jumped into a bus, it was the wrong one. The driver kicked me out at the next stop, now I had the chance to try if all my waterproof gear can actually handle strong rain. I struggled back to the airport fighting the stormy winds. Feeling Nr. 1 – it’s warm, so I’m happy

I started to get to know South America through telenovelas. I loved the houses the characters were living in. High ceilings, big rooms, chandeliers, stained glass windows a patio inside the house. Feeling Nr.2 – now I’m living in one so I’m happy

One of my “have to go” places always has been Cuba, especially after Dirty Dancing 2 – call me a cliché...It was mostly because of the cars. Absolutely love the atmosphere that retro cars give to a place. Feeling Nr. 3 – I don’t have to go to Cuba, they have them all here so I’m happy

I’m in a new country and that means a different diet – the orange juice is too sweet, coffee is mixed with sugar, no idea which cheese to buy and who drinks soya milk with orange taste! Feeling Nr. 4 – I found pickles that taste just like home so I’m happy

What are your first impressions of Montevideo? By Federica

INGLES
What are your first impressions of Montevideo ??.... a question that seems easy, but in truth it is difficult because I’m here only since two weeks and I saw little of this city yet.

What I say to my friends and my family in Italy when they make me this question is: "It 's really a city!" ... because I did not expect to find a town such as those found in Europe, I thought there were more different things ... and yet, at least in appearance, it is not like this.

Actually until this time I have only seen the place most "central" in Montevideo, the periphery I do not know still and probably is very different from what I've seen until this moment, but I want to discover.

Turning to walk through the city we discovered that there are many opportunities to do things (museums, cultural events, concerts, courses ....) and this is very interesting! ... We already went for our first free tango lesson and was so funny!

Moreover, the Uruguayan people are really friendly and are available to help if needed; I do not think this is a feature so obvious when I think how many distrust there is in european Countries. Surely we should not generalize, but this is the first impression that the locals have given me. In a short time we have known several people (also thanks to Audele) ... simply going to a concert or a pub.

The first thing that struck me much the first day in which I was here are the house... in a street I’ have not seen a house like another: each house has its own style, color, something that distinguishes it from others! ... is great! ... and above all there are no tall buildings to prevent any view:in the central area there are homes that do not exceed 4 floors almost! What joy!

The second thing that struck me is seeing around the city all day some characters on carts pulled by horses (the horses are very thin and shabby) that stop at all rubbish bins for picking paper, organic rubbish and plastic. I do not remember how call them and I do not know if they sell what they collect, but it certainly seems to me that are very poor people. However, you wake up in the morning, look outside and see the dustmans (like in europe) that go to empty the bins ... .... Strange contradiction!

Another thing that I have yet to understand is the price of life: the supermarket prices are more or less the same as ours, all technological things instead are very expensive (I think because they are luxury goods as well mobile phones all the people have), bus are cheaper than us and go in a pub to drink a beer at is cheaper. I do not know ... I have yet to understand.

I can not wait to know a little bit spanish language in order to understand and discover a lot of things that I would now already know, but I give me time ... I just have a little patience!

Non so…devo ancora capire bene.

POLACO

Kolejna rzecz, którą chcę zrozumieć to koszt życia, utrzymania.
